We like to think our decisions are logical.
But they're often shaped by emotion, loss aversion, and hidden mental shortcuts.
Why do we pay extra for a toaster warranty… and then spend money on lottery tickets hoping to get rich?
Same brain. Different frame.
This issue looks at how risk isn’t just external — it's something we manufacture internally through fear, uncertainty, and avoidance.
Let’s make that invisible process visible — and usable.
CORE INSIGHTS — Risk from Different Angles
1. You Owe It to You — Denzel Washington
“Don’t confuse movement with progress. You can run in place and not get anywhere.”
Insight:
The most dangerous risk is the one we justify: staying still.
Inaction, driven by fear or comfort, is a quiet thief of progress.
Growth begins where excuses end.
2. Culture Demands Courage — The Daily Coach
“Great cultures are not created by playing it safe.”
Insight:
Whether in a team or alone, risk is how culture is made.
The first person to raise their hand, speak up, or try something new, reshapes what’s “normal.”
Risk isn’t rebellion — it’s leadership.
3. No Alpha Without Asymmetry — Howard Marks (Oaktree Capital)
“Superior returns don’t come from bearing average risk.”
Insight:
Avoiding risk guarantees average outcomes.
The goal isn’t to avoid uncertainty — it’s to navigate it better.
True intelligence lies in selecting non-average risks with above-average clarity.
QUICK TOOL — “The Framing Flip”
Try this in under 1 minute:
Think of one decision you’re avoiding.
Write two frames:
Gain → “If I succeed, I’ll…”
Loss → “If I fail, I’ll…”
Notice which sentence changes how you feel.
Frame-switching is invisible. Until you make it conscious.
Once you see it — you get to choose.
Based on Prospect Theory by Tversky & Kahneman (1981)
SHORT VIDEO (No excuses. 50 seconds.)
“Everything you want is on the other side of risk.”
This video hit me hard. Play it, once.
Then ask:
What’s one thing I’m not doing because of fear?
And is the fear really worse than the cost of not trying?
